My Homeschool Journey: Discovering My 'Why'

How it all began
I didn’t grow up dreaming of homeschooling. In fact, the only homeschool family I knew as a kid didn’t have a TV, wore matching outfits, and had a house so clean it felt like a museum. So yeah—my image of homeschoolers was somewhere between “weird” and “definitely not me.”
Fast forward to motherhood, and I heard that quote from Voddie Baucham: “We cannot continue to send our children to Caesar for their education and be surprised when they come home as Romans.” It hit me hard. I was half inspired, half offended—but mostly convicted. That was the beginning.
Now, I should mention: I liked being in charge. Like, really liked it. I was a budding control freak who occasionally consulted God and my very patient husband before executing my perfectly laid plans.
But then, life laughed at my plans. My son lost his language, professionals insisted he needed school, and I was pregnant and exhausted. So off to public school he went. We were in a tiny town with Christian teachers, and I tried to make peace with it—until we moved to Houma, Louisiana. My husband saw the local school options and said, “We’re homeschooling.” (By “we,” he meant me, of course—he worked six days a week.)
That’s when I realized God had been steering this ship all along, even if I was gripping the wheel like a maniac. What started as a reluctant yes turned into a full-on calling. I’ve learned (slowly, painfully) to let go of control and trust God—not just with salvation, but with math curriculum, meltdown days, and everything in between.
